Year 10 History: Rights, Freedoms and the Ngarrindjeri

Mark Koolmatrie

Mark Koolmatrie is a proud Ngarrindjeri man with a lineage that goes back to the first Tangani, Yaralde and Ramindjeri people of the Kurangk, Lakinyeri and of Karta.

Mark has worked with several experienced senior History teachers to develop an original presentation that aligns with the Year 10 Rights and Freedoms Depth Study.

He can deliver a one or two lesson presentation that examines the impact of historic policies and legislation in South Australia on the rights and freedoms of his people.

About the Presentation

  • Hear how Mark’s brother, Bluey and his friends used to escape into the bush from ‘the big black cars’.
  • Hear the story of his sister, taken from Bonney reserve and then married Archie Roach.
  • Learn why First Nations people had to leave town at night in his local town and where ‘Boundary Street’ got its name.
  • Find out how you could get back your rights in exchange for your heritage … would you?

Your class will go on a journey through history with the Ngarrindjeri and find reasons for hope.

Sessions can be tailored to your school’s requirements.
